Charlene is completing her first term as Trustee of the Newport-Mesa Unified School District. She seeks reelection in order to continue serving the students, staff, and teachers of the community.

Charlene has served her community as Principal, District Science/Math Coordinator, Summer Science Principal and teacher for the Newport-Mesa Unified School District from 1988-2012.

Prior to serving on the board of education, Charlene served the community as PTA/PFO President, Newport-Mesa Citizens Oversight Committee – Measure A, American Cancer Society Daffodil Day Chairperson, Costa Mesa Child Care and Youth Services Committee Chairperson.

Charlene continues to serve her community as a Pacific Symphony Class Act Ambassador and is recognized for her volunteer services and activities in the Newport-Mesa community.

Charlene has lived in Costa Mesa since 1976. Charlene has raised 4 children who attended NMUSD Area 2 schools. Charlene‘s better half, Scott Cleveland, is retired from ATT and currently attends Cal State Fullerton and works in The Success Center at Orange Coast College.

Charlene was awarded The Association of California School Administrators Orange County Elementary Principal of the Year while serving NMUSD as principal. As principal, she helped two schools earn California Distinguished School recognition. Her schools were Orange County Gold Medal School award winners. She was Newport-Mesa Principal of the Year twice and Orange County Special Education “Friend” award winner.
